Concept and Benefit

What is TUM?

Tikal Update Manager (TUM) is a YUM-like graphical user interface that wraps Eclipse and Callisto-like update sites, adding intuitive discover/install/update/remove functionality for Eclipse plug-ins, features, and other bundled packages.

How does TUM improve my development productivity?

As said above, TUM provides faster, more intuitive, developer-friendly interface for discovering, installing, upgrading and removing eclipse plug-ins and other software packages (like JBoss AS runtime, MySQL runtime, Hibernate, Maven runtime etc.) of the development environment.

TUM saves you time and effort by eliminating the need to search the web for the right plug-in, the right version, with the right dependencies, and then to download and install manually.

Since TUM extends Callisto repository metadata structure, it's easy to "shop for a plug-in" according to the desired functionality or category.

Tech Details

Why do I get the Tikal Splash Screen? Can I remove it?

TUM selects in its initial setup Tikal's enhanced Eclipse Platform rather then the common Eclipse Platform. We use the Tikal splash screen to distinguish between the two. You can remove the splash screen by un-installing the Tikal Eclipse Platform feature patch. Future versions of TUM will allow you to choose the Eclipse Platform upon initial setup.

What is TUM Queue?

Every operation marked for execution by TUM is not carried out immediately, rather, it is inserted into an ordered queue you can later process manually.

All install, update and remove operations are aggregated into the queue, so you can later pick them out one-by-one, as you wish. The Queue also enables automatic dependency handling, for situations where selected features require additional features that do not exist in your current Eclipse environment.

How do I know which repository to choose?

You can use any eclipse update site as repository, More information can be found under "TUM Updatesites" menu section.
[top]

Is there a need to keep using Eclipse's built-in update manager?

Not really. All functionality of the built-in Update Manager is available through TUM.
[top]

How does TUM automatically select a mirror site?

As in the Eclipse Update Manager, the default mirror site is determined according to your local region.
